The world's cheapest car has been launched in India today.
The US$2000 Tata Nano is a tiny 600cc commuter car designed specifically for the subcontinent with no unwanted accessories like radio or aircon. The creation of Ratan Tata, the business tycoon from Mumbai, the car may be automotive saviour or environmental villain depending on your perspective.
The vehicle is generating huge interest worldwide as a safer alternative to the overcrowded motorbike for many Indian families. The 1.5m wide x 3.1m long vehicle is being touted to increase the Indian car market by up to 60%.
This may be great for motorists but environmentalists are concerned that this massive increase in vehicular traffic will be the breaking point for India's already choked roads and atmosphere.
